I am a 2nd year Mechatronics systems engineering student and have owned my ender 3 pro for close to 5(?) years now. It won't be a substitute for a formal education, but sometimes experience is better. Mind you a teacher that was supposed to be teaching a type of technology class! That young person ended up teaching their teacher how to use 3d cad software. Well, as you might have guessed they were determined.and I was (gladly, and willingly given their success) forced to buy them a laptop about a week later. I lent them my laptop, my 3d printer, and pointed them to a choice of cad software. The kid had expressed an interest in mechanical engineering, yet literally had ZERO 3d print experience, ZERO design knowledge, and ZERO experience using any cad software. To share, I once challenged a then 13 year old to design something, with the promise I would buy this person a brand new laptop IF their complex design worked. Especially if you are going to do robotics or anything similar. ![]() You can make your designs in cad, 3d print, then test them in real life. Do I need to start teaching myself physics (more than I technically already have with electronics)? I'm not super rich either, so I'm a bit worried about buying one and having it collect dust on a shelf. My question is, is this an attainable goal? I've found many posts of people with pre-existing engineering background getting printers and being happy with them. Now obviously, being 16 and all, my knowledge of these things are still extremely limited, but I'm hoping there are enough resources on the internet to maybe teach myself a thing or two before heading to university. I plan on becoming a mechanical engineer with a specialization in automation and robotics, and feel like getting a 3D printer would be the next logical step for me to move on to more functional and challenging projects (as opposed to attaching an infra-red sensor to an LED or making a calculator on a breadboard and such.) I've been messing around with electronics for a few years now and even before that I started programming at the age of around 10 (though that doesn't really give a realistic estimate of my skills since I only started taking it seriously until very very recently). ![]() Hey, so I'm a 16 y/o high schooler from Finland.
